Magical Mirai

Today we cover some updates on Project Mirai - Mirai Suenaga Smart Doll is completely modeled digitally and printed using modern 3D printing technologies.
The made-in-Japan robot doll is designed to be your everyday companion and will do things like tell you when you get Facebook, Twitter, mail, calendar notifications, teach you Japanese, be your car navigation, tell you when you need to buy milk by communicating with the Smart Refrigerators on the market and most importantly - make sure you are never ever ronery anymore.

You can see Mirai moving below in our first motion test. Mirai is very rough around the edges in the video and was the first time that I saw her move - brought manly tears to my eyes ^^;

This image is a summary of what Mirai Suenaga Smart Doll does. A few folks mentioned the word "Magical" when describing Mirai and compared her to anime titles like Chobits, Hand Maid May, Angelic Layer and Ghost in the Shell.

At first I thought "Magical" sounded kinda cheesy but it kinda grew on me by the end of writing this post ^^;

The CPU unit known as Mirai Core will be much more advanced and here is what its looking like so far. Everything will be distributed between 3 boards and will fit inside Mirai's detacheable head.

The part that took the most time was the oppai to make sure that the join between the oppai and the waist looked as natural as possible. Both had to be separate parts to enable more articulation and fit all the electronics inside.

As Mirai is controlled by Android, we want to enable owners to plug her into their car and use Google Navigate to find their way.
The Host Voice of Smart Doll will be Mirai but will also allow Guest Voices from other applications.

At the moment Mirai has a tough time standing on her own - if there is a breeze then she would fall over (ouch).
Once all the servomotors are ready however, she would be able to balance herself - just like the way a Segway does.

And so Mirai Suenaga is born!

The journey begins.

Mirai exploring her surroundings. I think I've only mentioned the word "interactive" up until now but don't think I've emphasised that she will come with quite a bit of Artificial Intelligence - I want all Smart Dolls to be unique to their owner.

Next we take a lookie at Mirai in the media. Mirai was featured on the Japanese TV show Ima Kono Kao Ga Sugoi which is presented by Sakurai Sho.
The producer couldn't tell the difference between "Amazon and Microsoft" and "Dolls and Figures."

Mirai was also featured for a wee bit on the KTLA morning show in the US.

Currently planning to bring a few Smart Dolls to AX2014 for sale.

Some of the articles may appear to be negative - but its actually just as Keikaku down to the small details like the images that I intended them to use ^o^

The kanji for Mirai in Japanese is [未来] which means "The Future."
Her name seems to be appropriate in many ways especially for the Smart Doll project.
The future is looking bright for this young lady - this "Magical Mirai" ^^;

Maridah at CJC

Maridah - cosplay celebrity and a great comrade of mine who I first met at Anime Expo 4 years ago.
Her cosplay has been featured in print, TV and all over the internets and she is also well known in Japan too.
Maridah is also a show host for EX Studio which produces programmes about anime and gaming, and recently she's also become a Brand Ambassador for Crunchyroll.

Maridah has just arrived in Penang and be joining us as a guest at Culture Japan Con which takes place this weekend August 17 - 18 2013 at SQCC. If you want to meet her and got no tickets then just turn up this weekend!

How many of you folks recognise this most cutesome cosplayer?
This is Angie who is a rather popular cosplayer from Malaysia and I think you will be able to see why from her work in these photos.

She's also known as Ringo at Moe-Moe Kyun Maid Café, and you can find her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Angie7099

We are really excited to have Angie join us at Culture Japan Con alongside Shirahane Nao, Asakawa Yuu, Ikkyuu, Maridah, and vividblaze! Angie happens to also be from the island of Penang where CJC will be held on 17 - 18 August!

If you aint got no tickets then don't fret - just turn up and get them at the door!

Angie has been a great comrade and supporter of Culture Japan too, and she has cosplayed a few of our mascot characters in various uniforms. Here she's cosplaying as Mirai Suenaga in her cheerleader outfit.

And this is her cosplay of our new character Chitose Shirasawa.

She's cosplayed as Mirai in her summer school uniform too, and it looks like she will be selling some prints at the Guest Merchandise Booth!

Japanese group vividblaze will be flying in to Penang today to perform at Culture Japan Con this weekend 17th & 18th August - tomorrow!

If you watched any of Culture Japan TV then you would have heard their cool tunes as they managed all the music for the show - check out the lead singer Miho singing Tightrope below.

I still owe you Culture Japan Con coverage (few thousand photos to sort through ><) but needed to tell you today that Culture Japan will be having a 2 shell scheme booth at AniManGaki this weekend ^o^

During CJC, one of the organizers of AniManGaki approached me and asked if we would attend. Wasn't planning on attending and didn't think we would have enough time to put something together for another event so soon after CJC.

However, through the learnings of rolling out these booths for a while now, we got a workflow in place and have just managed to sort out our booth layout, logistics and manpower.

AniManGaki (AMG) is one of Malaysia's more popular ACG events which is packed with stage events, cosplay, doujin, anime and more - the next one will be held this weekend at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre.

This is the menu for Animangaki 2013!
Most of it is the same as CJC - but please forgive me as there is no Touch n Go - that was only for CJC attendees ><

As announced at CJC, as part of Project Mirai, we are planning to rollout a worldwide Culture Japan Membership System which will entitle you to various privileges.

I particularly want to thank those who came to Penang to support our first event and as I mentioned on stage, folks who have the Comrade Pass will be getting privileges from now on starting at AniManGaki.

All you need to do is to show your Comrade Pass (& Lanyard) and you will get 1 poster of your choice - no terms or conditions or bribes from me.
Posters are worth RM25 each and are A2 in size at 190gsm.

Folks who went to CJC and can't come to AniManGaki - don't worry as we got you covered - you will start to get privileges at other events - just do not loose that Comrade Pass and Lanyard!

I initially posted this saying that we were going to give away 2 posters but then realized that we don't have enough to go around - I want to make sure that as many people as possible get to have our lovely girls on their walls ^^;

Full details of the Culture Japan Membership System will be released at a later date.

Just hot off the printers is the new map of Penang featuring Mirai Suenaga and friends! This is a collaboration with Penang Global Tourism where my goal is to make maps more fun ^o^

This will be given out free at our booth desu!

We will be selling Shirahane Nao-sensei's Mirai Doujinshi - its the first one ever ^o^

The Mirai doujinshi contains illustrations that sensei has done for us so far.

The latest work for us by sensei is this one of Kizuna Yumeno - Mirai's rival.

RM15 desu.

This illustration was only used on my Itasha so far.

And this was the first illustration of Mirai that sensei done for us.

And here are the T-shirts.

This is the classic Tora T-shirt which is part of the Culture Japan Apparel line - its been around since the beginning and is always the first design to sell out.

The next design is Mirai in her "Solar Marine" uniform.

I love retro pixel games really like this design - we call it "Millennium Retro."

This is the first Moekana T-shirt I made as a sample many moons ago and it finally gets the mass production treatment. This design is simply called "Kimono."

We have been improving the quality of the print over the past year and this is the best so far using a printing technology called Direct Print - we get full color gradients unlike previous Silk Screening versions. It's also durable in the wash too and doesn't crack like some of the initial batch did ToT

T-shirts are all RM90 and come with 4 free cards - Moekana Onna (female), Otoko (male) and Chitose Shirasawa and Kizuna Yumeno cards - these complement the character cards that are included in the Moekanji pack.

The size chart - just FYI - I always wear the S size cos I like em tight ^^;
Many T-shirts out there show the tips of Man Boobs which I'm not keen on so I chose a thicker material. Unless you are super excited, you need not worry about your tips showing when wearing Moekana T-shirts.

Culture Japan Con 2013 Summary

The first ever Culture Japan Con (CJC) took place on the 17th and 18th of August 2013 at Straits Quay Convention Centre Penang Malaysia which turned out to be much more successful than any of us had anticipated for a first event which was attended by 7500 comrades!

We sold tickets to 6000 comrades out of which 1500 were pre-orders for 2 day tickets - this gives us a total of about 7500 turnstile attendees over the 2 days.

The theme of CJC is "Comrade" and follows on the concept of Culture Japan Night (CJN) where attendees can enjoy activities and interact with guests in a relaxed environment.
Where possible, we created as many opportunities for fans to interact with our guests and it was great to see that many people mentioned that CJC had a homely feel to it. We even had a study area for folks to cram for their exams ^o^

For the guests, I thought it only made sense to invite my close comrades too who where voice actress Yuu Asakawa, illustrator Ikkyuu-sensei, illustrator Shirahane Nao-sensei (DMYO), cosplayer Maridah, cosplayer Angie and music band Vividblaze.

Many of the vendors were also comrades who I have been working with for a while and include Good Smile Company, Bushiroad, Kinokuniya, Little Akiba, Nozomi, VBG Network, AFA Shop, Comic Fiesta, Tomodashi T-shirts, Sakura Maiden Artworks and Infinity Sky. We also had a load of doujin booths too.

A quick thanks to sponsors B&W, Little Akiba and VBG. Also thanks to Air Asia, Holiday Inn, Holiday Tours, SQCC, Gamertakus, The Japan Foundation, the Japanese Embassy, WOW Japan, Aeon, Oh Sushi and all who made this event possible.

We had been taking notes running up to and after CJC for a post mortem that we recently had. I will be publishing all our bad judgement calls and learnings in a report for you too so that you can use those notes to put together your own events.

While CJC was announced back in June, we didn't really have time to work on CJC until after Anime Expo which left us with only 6 weeks to put CJC together meaning that all of us put in quadruple time to make the event happen - this photo taken after CJC shows us in the Left For Dead pose ><

There were so many unknowns as it was our first event and had no idea how many people were going to come. Many folks in Malaysia asked "Why Penang?" then folks outside of Malaysia asked "Why Malaysia?" and Martians asked "Why on Earth?"

I understand that KL being the capital of Malaysia would have most probably got us more attendees but what's more important than attendee numbers is that the everybody enjoyed themselves - we always focus on quality over quantity.

While its difficult to please absolutely everybody, CJC is organized by fans for fans and we know what its like to attend cons - where possible, we tried to make CJC a homely relaxed event and that is exactly the same feedback that we got from many of you.

Thanks again to all who came to support our first convention!

Will be posting more photos taken at CJC later which will focus on stage, the CJC official shop, booths, cosplay etc but for now am going to leave you with a wall of photos which were taken by photographers ARC Photography, Razrig, Yunamon, Jei and Fuminari - many staff members also helped take these photos too.

Uchimizu 2013

Uchimizu [打ち水[うちみず]] refers to the action of sprinkling water on the streets in the summer and has been a tradition in Japan for many many moons. The water keeps the dust low and cools off the immediate area.

The Uchimizukko Daishugo event makes this tradition more interesting by getting loads of maids and cosplayers to do the watering. This years Uchimizu took place recently and marks its 10th anniversary where they managed to lower the air/ground temperature from 34.4°C/38.4°C to 32.4°C/30.2°C by the end of the event.

We are doing a lot of production at the moment - the main project is Smart Doll with other stuff such as the T-shirts, Moekana 2nd Edition and now in the middle of making Moekana Mugs and Bags.

I thought we'd take a lookie at how we make posters at an offset printing factory. These posters were made in Indonesia, and will be available at the Mirai Mie Bakso booth at AFA Indonesia.

Here's an example of an industry standard offset printer.

Over the past year of making posters, we learnt a lot about poster production and have gradually raised the quality of Mirai Posters from convention to convention. In our first few attempts, we ended up using materials that were not 100% ideal for posters, some were too thick and would curl up along the sides, and others were too thin and tore or got damaged easily.

Eventually, we determined that the best material for posters was the 260gsm art card with matte lamination. It costs a wee bit more but feels sturdy and the matte lamination gives it a smooth finish.

Another thing to take note when making posters is colour. Most offset printers use CMYK colors. While many printers will do colour conversion for you, it's best to convert your data into CMYK mode so you know how the print will look like and not get a big shock if the colours turn out different than you expected.

If you are preparing your data with photoshop, you can do so with Image > Mode > CMYK Color

At the factory, our assistant carefully calibrates each color with their spanking brand new machine through the touch screen interface from Heidelberg. This is to ensure that the printed poster matches the digital data as closely as possible. Each design is calibrated several times until the standard is matched.

When preparing data for posters, always provide graphic that is slightly larger than the final product. This is called the bleed. This ensures that when the poster is cut into the actual size, you don't end up with white edges in case the knife was not completely accurate.

All the posters at this point also has a white border around them, which is where the cutting template is printed on.

Once the colors are approved, the posters are left to dry for an hour, and then collected in a stack to be cut by a giant knife which can cut 500 posters in one go.

Comic Fiesta Mirai Fanart

Its that time of the year again where Malaysia's largest ACG event Comic Fiesta (CF) begins its 100 Day Countdown!

Well it hasn't actually begin yet - its just been announced that participants can choose to draw any of the CF mascots and include Mirai Suenaga in their submission.

Entries will start to be uploaded to the Comic Fiesta official facebook 100 days before the event this December the 21st and 22nd.

Comic Fiesta knows their artists well and just like last year, I'll ask them to select 20 folks who do decide to draw Mirai and invite them all on stage again to receive a goodie bag. Last year it was a Moekana T-shirt but I'll be including more stuff too - not sure what yet as we are still making a bunch of new stuff ^^

All entries that are submitted will be featured on Culture Japan Season 3 due to be broadcast from April 2014 in Japan, across the globe and on 8TV in Malaysia. There will be one episode that focuses on Japanese ACG events in Malaysia which include CF and CJC.

Landscape illustrations will make it easier for us to display your work but portrait also can lah. Details of Mirai's various uniforms can be found on her page.

When you submit your entries to CF, make sure your name and link is stated as we will use that to display next to your artwork in the broadcast. All artwork belongs to you and all we do is to highlight it.

Hologram Concert

I was sceptical when I heard about how a hologram concert could be done with materials like bridal or mosquito netting or even net curtains - then we tried it out ourselves and was proven wrong.

For our first tests, the effect is quite good - next we need to work on tweaking the environment variables such as the type of material we are going to use to catch the projection, type of projector, angle and brightness of projector etc.

We are also working on a new MMD model of our Mirai Suenaga too and some new tunes by vividblaze and choreography by folks who done the dance moves in Macross Frontier for Ranka Lee.

When all variables have been tweaked, we get enough rigging and do a live size test at a CJ Night in the near future - within the next few weeks.

The following is just one of the videos we used for reference. It shows how the netting can be more effective than a more expensive screen.
Will be updating you with progress on our experiments so that you too can make your own hologram concerts ^^

Its that time of the year again!

Anime Festival Asia Indonesia 2013 followed by Culture Japan Night (CJ Night) ^o^

I'll be at AFAID for all 3 days and hope to see you there. If we don't manage to catch up with each other at AFAID, we can certainly do so at CJ Night.

CJ Night is a place for like minded comrades to mingle and get to know each other. I love spending time with readers and will be doing the usual signing and photo sessions and hunting for talent too ^o^

We plan to have some Moekana Tournaments like last year - also feel free to bring your figures and dolls to display. Got cosplay? Also can!

I'm always looking for folks who can either work for us full or part time or take on commision work. If you got stuff to show me then just bring it along!
