Anime Production Fund

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has appointed me as Creative Director for a project of theirs called Mazer where I am leading a creative process on how consumers can contribute more to the anime industry.
As you know, its tough for anime companies to recuperate costs for all the reasons listed in this post.

Folks register on the Mazer and chip in ideas which I manage - I then fuse ideas together to form a method which can be purchased by a company who will have rights to materialize that idea into a product or service. The auction and thereafter process is managed by the government.
Folks who submit good ideas will also be recognized by the government which will lead to good things ^o^

One idea that a few folks submitted which I've also been thinking about too is to have a anime production fund which anime fans can contribute to - a bit like Kick Starter.

Folks would donate anything from 1 USD and depending on how much they donate, the donator would get some form of perk - name in credits or even a cameo. Companies would also be able to donate funds and get their logo in the anime somewhere - a bit like Tiger and Bunny.

The anime production would go ahead when the fund goal is reached. To give you an idea of how much funds can be raised - this project on Kick Starter raised over 3 million USD. I guess this is like looking for investors for a project but on a wider scale.

What other ideas do you have for consumers to contribute to the anime industry? Would you donate funds to an anime production budget? If so what sort of anime would you like to see made?

Japan White Day

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Every March the 14th is "White Day" which is today.
To make more monies from Valentines day, the Japanese invented "White Day" as an excuse for men to buy candy to give to women in return for the chocolate that they received - theres even an official White Day site.

The reason its called "White Day" is because the color of sugar (white) is the main ingredient for candy which was traditionally given on White Day - source from Wikipedia. These days however, one does not have to give candy and can be white chocolate or marshmallows or condensed milk?

The term "Giri Choco"[義理チョコ] is used to describe chocolate that is given as an obligation - like to ones superiors or boss. If you are managing ladies in Japan and receive chocolate from them then its probably not because she likes you but because she expects a pay rise come next evaluation season.

Has this White Day thing caught up in other parts of the world?

All Nippon Entertainment Works

The Japanese government has been promoting Cool Japan since 2010 and ever since, various industries in Japan have had a keen eye on the rest of the world - some have taken action while others remain cautious.
This week, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) held the Cool Japan Conference where they invited about 90 of Japan's top corporations and content producers for a business matching session.

I had the honor of being invited to talk at the meeting along with the likes of AKB48 producer Yasushi Akimoto and Yukio Edano - currently the Minister of Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry but formerly the Chief Cabinet Secretary.

Since the Japanese government started to notice my shenanigans, I've been working for them on various projects. Recently, they have assigned me as a Creative Director for a project called Mazer which I talk about in this post.

The flow of the meeting is simple - content producers give a pitch and the large corporations decide whether they want to do business with us. The government will then match us up and we do wheelings and dealings - win x win.

I've never given a pitch of this scale before - and I had to do it in 5 mins ^^; I've only really started to give talks in Japanese ever since I started to work with the government.

Image may be NSFW.

A quick going over my background - mentioning that I worked at Japan Airlines as an Engineer, Amazon as Website Manager and Microsoft as a Product Manager was a mouthful and took up time so I now combine everything into this slide and just mention that most of my previous work has been IT related without going over the company names as they can read it on the slide.

Japanese folks usually only do business with those who have a reputable background or through an introduction so this slide is important to have at the beginning. If you are giving a talk of any kind, let your audience briefly know what you do and what your background is which will help them decide whether they want to stay awake for the rest of your talk ^^;

One of the reasons why this meeting is so important is because the government is making the introductions for us.

The company that I setup after I left cooperate life is called Mirai Inc - the mission is disseminate Japanese culture throughout the world through various means such as web, TV and other media and products - this is done under the Culture Japan brand.

Akimoto-san's final words of advice is "Collaboration is key" and gives an analogy. It does not matter how healthy a carrot may be for a kid - if the kid does not like carrots then s/he wont want it.
But what you do is add apple juice - its taste may be appealing to that kid who didn't like carrots - a successful collaboration.

Akimoto-san talks about how more and more young folks are wanting Korean products - music, cosmetics, fashion, electronics etc etc.
I speak, read and write Korean and have always been interested in Korean culture - but I dont get much opportunity to consume Korean content apart from all the Koren drama that wifey watches ^^

You read what it was like for me when I was living in the UK - the Internets didn't exist back then! If I wanted information about Japan, I pretty much relied on two Japanese book shops in London where I picked up magazines, books and the occasional snack. There was hardly anything about Japan in local newspapers or TV.

These days however, you've got places like JList which can send just about anything to all corners of the world - including health material which I had to get from a newspaper ^^;;;

But how about brick and mortar stores? Are there shops readily available in your neck of the woods that sell japanese stuff? How about your local TV or newspapers - information available about the Japanese news you care about?

Clik here to view.

Is you being a fan of the Idolmaster girls but dont really want the console versions? Got an iPhone or iOS device handy? Then you maybe happy that Bandai Namco Games are releasing Idolmaster Mobile for the iOS later this month and its going to be free.

As a producer, you choose one of the girls and work with her to make her famous throughout Japan. The interesting thing about this game is that its location based meaning that you will get offers from various locations - you take your idol and physically go to that location to complete the offer such as TV appearance etc. Sounds like a good way to get folks to get out n about ^^;

Even if you are not in Japan, you can still use it as a clock and play with the girls. I'm guessing that they may restrict it to the Japanese iTunes store but a Bothan spy tells me that there is a way around this.
Not sure how much of it will be playable without enabling the app to know your location though.

Check out the game below.

Uchimizu

Uchimizu [打ち水[うちみず]] refers to the action of sprinkling water on the streets in the summer and has been a tradition in Japan for many many moons. The water keeps the dust low and cools off the immediate area.

The Uchimizukko Daishugo event has made this tradition more interesting by getting legions of maids to do the watering. The pink maid in this pic wearing glasses was my fave out of the lot ^o^

Koenji

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Located in West Tokyo is an area called Koenji [高円寺[こうえんじ]] - a very cozy residential area filled with Shotengai. Shotengai [商店街[しょうてんがい]] are streets filled with shops which cater for the residents living nearby - restaurants, grocery stores, supermarkets, pharmacies, barbers, post offices, book stores, game centers and izakaya (pubs).

Areas like Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya are not called Shotengai and are usually referred to as Hankagai [繁華街[はんかがい]]. Hankagai are usually located around major train stations in non-residential areas.
Koenji has a large population of young folks. There are many one room apartments/mansions and food and clothing is generally cheap. There are also many cheap second hand clothing stores and zakka (life style products) to be found.

Koenji is also where you can enjoy the Awa Odori [阿波踊り] festival which takes place every Summer - this year to take place on August 25th.

Koenji would be a great place to see a slice of life in Tokyo and you can get there by getting off at Koenji station [高円寺駅] on the JR Chuo line [中央線].

Anime Censorship

Culture Japan Season 2 was broadcast in Japan on Tokyo MX TV during anime time - after Dacapo and before Working!! it was also broadcast in America on Mnet. Now its due to be broadcast in Asia - but not without being screened.

This post highlights "problematic" areas which I have been asked to remove do to broadcasting regulations in Asia - specifically Malaysia and Singapore. I just wanted to let you know beforehand why the Asian broadcast will have Mirai marks all over it and that it wasn't my intentional doing ^^;

Anyhow - the first "problematic" scene is this - apparently Mirai-chan's left "pupil" is showing. We are replacing this 8 seconds with something completely new though.

I'm beginning to think - even if we can officially get anime and merchandise distribution to your neck of the woods at about the same timing as Japan, regulations in other countries will still mean that folks would want the original stuff.

A Japanese figure maker mentioned that they would have to make the strands of hair on figures blunt if they wanted to release figures officially in certain countries due to regulations.

Desk Diary 2011/09 - 2012/02

Recently noticed a direct relation between how often I can write stuff for the site and how many milestones that my company achieves - unfortunately meaning that the more I achieve, the less I can write as my time is taken away to complete my goals. I'll never give up on writing though as its important not only for me to continue sharing but also because this site serves as a record of my life so that I can look back at what I've been doing.

Recently I've had more offers to produce and present on various TV shows in Japan and around the globe - have accepted a couple and one will start in Japan in a few weeks - its a morning show this time round. Will post more details on that soon.

Also working on a product called Moekana - a new way of learning Japanese! Good Smile Company are distributing the product which should be with you next month. Have also been doing more work for the Japanese government which is always fulfilling.
Am also working on a load more products and wot not that will be revealed all in good time ^^;

Anyway, this post contains photos of the office taken between October 2011 until the end of Feb 2012.

Back then my MacBook Pro 17" was my main machine - the iMac was used for editing the show. I need at least two machines for my work - When the iMac is rendering, it cant do anything else at all! I need another machine so that I can continue with mail and wot not.

First thing to do is to copy my home directory and settings over from my MacBook Pro 17" to the iMac. If you turn on your Mac with the "T" key held down, it boots up in Target mode meaning you can mount it on any other mac as a HDD.

Fujisawa High School Photos 1

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Filming at Fujisawa high school this time last Friday for Culture Japan.
You've seen what high schools look like in 2D anime and I have always wanted to show you what it looks like in 3D real life. The great folks at Fujisawa High School let us go to film their classes, sporting activities and most importantly the Keion-bu [軽音部] (after school music activities) which was just like the anime - live action K-ON!

The whole experience at Fujisawa was fascinating - I kept pointing at things saying "its just like anime!"

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

The visit to Fujisawa really made me want to go back to school ^^; I sat in a few of the lessons and wish I could have participated as a student instead. In many of the lessons, I saw the teachers encouraging the students to participate in discussion and interact with each other. From what I observed, the students are extremely diligent, creative and enjoy working in groups.

We were assigned 3 students from the keion-bu who we followed around for the day.

The after school activities (Bukatsu) [部活] are non compulsory (for most schools) but most of the students attend and practice. If I was a student now I'd probably go for computing, badminton or piano.
Are after school club activities existent in your kingdom? If so what do they offer and what did you take?

I was highly impressed at how diligent the students were at what they were studying and am slightly confused why some foreigners in Japan refuse to let their children go to a Japanese school. I even know folks who left Japan after they had kids because they didn't like the thought of their children going through Japanese education. How would you rate the quality of school education in your kingdom?

Getting a high school to let us film on their grounds required jumping through barbed wire flaming hoops - we nearly got the go ahead to film the school that Lucky Star was based on but got turned down right at the end ^^;

The approval process to film at a school is lengthy and involves parents committees and wot not.
It has however always been a goal of mine to show you something like this and I've always been asking for the possibility to film at a high school for the past few years and am extremely pleased to be able to bring you the piece.

One of the questions you wanted me to ask the students was "what anime do you watch" and I made sure to ask as many as I could.

The top answers are in this order:-
1.Naruto
2.One Piece
3.Conan

Many of them didn't even know about Haruhi or Keion. But the main reason is that titles like Keion are shown at the early hours of the morning - that's when these students are sleeping. Naruto, One Piece and Conan are shown at prime time regular hours when these students are likely to be home watching. Most of these students don't dabble with torrents or wot not either.

Why do some school uniform figma's come with two sets of shoes? Because students leave their outdoor shoes at the entrance and change into their indoor shoes. Indoor shoes are called "Uwabaki" [上履き].

Why do you like Japan?

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Back in December I gave a talk at the My Japan Conference - an event supported by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japanese tourism agency.
The theme of the conference was "How to make Japan into a country that foreigners want to visit." The theme of the event came about from the amount of foreigners who left Japan (and staying away) due to the nuclear situation after the 201103 earthquake and tsunami.

Many Japanese and foreign speakers attended and talked about how they were doing their bit to share Japanese culture with the aim to inspire others to think of ideas to bring back foreigners to Japan. My talk can be seen in the video below.

I previously talked about how I discovered and became to love Japanese culture. If I wrote down all the things I loved about Japan, the list would probably go on forever! I particularly enjoy Japanese Pop Culture - the anime, games, manga, cute 2D girlies, figures, dolls and so on - it was this culture that helped me discover more about Japan - the traditional and the modern.

Just a few things that come to mind about Japan that I really appreciate from the viewpoint of actually living here.

  • Transportation - trains, busses run frequently and on time - you can set your watch by the train arrival times!
  • Non tipping country - folks over here do not need to be motivated by tips.
  • Diligent and thorough with work. You never see folks with such passion sweeping the streets - its just incredible.
  • Attention to detail - the Japanese like to pay attention to detail and have a determination to make things perfect - this is known as Kodawari [こだわり]. Many foreigners dont understand the fuss to make things perfect which is one of the reasons why some of them dont get on over here.
  • Service sector - the service in Japan is just spot on - and thats because everybody just expects it to be. I order something from amazon and it arrives the same day. I can have folks from the post office come to pickup parcels to be delivered, in the event that trains are late, the station will issue proof that the trains were late so that you can show them to your boss.
  • Honesty - the honesty of Japanese folk is just astounding. I lost my Lumix DSLR at Narita airport just before I got onto the plane (panic!). When I arrived in Singapore, I was approached by staff saying that they found my camera and that I could just pick it up when I arrived back in Japan.

  • I left 2 new mobile phones on a train (panic!) and after telling a member of staff, he called the next station where they got on to the carriage and retrieved it for me - I went to the next station to pick up the phones.

  • My intern left is wallet on his chair in a restaurant - went back after 30 mins and managed to get it back.

  • And so far Japan is the only place where I have seen unmanned stores.
  • Endless supply of work - but only once you have built a network of connections. As previously mentioned, Folks in Japan generally do business with folks who they know or through an introduction. Once you have built a network for yourself, you pretty much have an endless supply of work - you then just need to continue cultivating new relationships to build your career or business.
As I said - these are just some aspects of Japanese society that I love which some folks around the world may not be able to appreciate just through consuming content online. I've been living in Japan for 13 years now and everyday is always a fresh new experience.

I would love to hear what you love about Japanese culture and why. Have you visited Japan before? Have you been learning about the culture with Japanese friends?

Everybody is prepared with a business card and I recommend that you have one too. It does not matter if you are student or unemployed - a business card is a tool that you need to build your career and life. Actually - being unemployed is probably the main reason why you *need* a business card.

Its easy to make new connections at events because everybody attending has a common interest which makes it easy to network. Everybody is generally trusted which makes it easier to cultivate new relationships and business.
No mater what you are doing in life, its very important for you to mingle with folks who share the same interests.

Anyway, going back to the main topic of today - would love to hear all the reasons why you like Japan and feel free to list the things that you dont like Japan. How did you discover Japan?
The government is reading my site too so if you want to get yourself heard then this would be the chance to do so!

Tentacle Grape

Image may be NSFW.

It was only a matter of time - before they came out with a drink called Tentacle Grape. If tentacles have always tickled your fancy, if the sight of grapes make you hot and flustered then you may now rejoice.

The label on the bottle shows a school girl holding out her hands - it looks like she is counting how many tentacles there are but I'm not sure.

?! Why is this blank?
I think its because its there for you to make an interesting Tentacle Grape image where Jlist will choose the best ones and send you some to drink!
The layered Photoshop file is available for those who want more flexibility.

Post your entry anywhere - on my Facebook wall, Twitter, Figure.fm or the community site but post a link to your work in the comments below so that Jlist can choose an entry. You got until this time next week - Jlist will reply to your comment and I'll hook you up so that they can send you your heath drink.

Arms Installation is Complete - Good Luck!

Top Stores In Akihabara

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Photos taken a few weeks ago in the holy land - Akihabara. Some of these snapped just before the Good Smile Company Broadcast and the Hobby Maker Show 2012 Winter event.
I've asked this question before but that was a while ago - if you was to recommend 1 store/restaurant in Akihabara, what would it be?
Would it be the retro game store Super Potato? The At Home Maid Cafe? Or how about Clone Factory where you can get a clone of yourself made?

Folks who are currently in Tokyo and who would like to answer the poll below in person should meet me at Akihabara on 2012/03/30 (Friday) at about 15:00 and wait outside Gamers. I'll be filming for a new show that I'm presenting on in Japan called Check Time which starts next Tuesday. If you come you will be on TV next Tuesday. Keep an eye on my Twitter for the exact time of when I'll be in Akihabara.

Announcements 2012/03/29

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Some announcements and updates that I should have made earlier but just didn't get round to it ><

  • I'm presenting on a new TV show called Check Time which starts next Monday April 2nd in Japan on Tokyo MX TV where I share Japanese Pop Culture on more of a business level for the domestic market.
    Unlike Culture Japan, there are no plans to broadcast the show in other parts of the world but I'll be uploading my bits n pieces to the Internets just like Culture Japan.

  • The filming for the show starts tomorrow (2012/03/30) ^^; I'll be in Akihabara at about 3pm (may be a bit earlier) interviewing fellow gaijins about their favorite places to visit in the holy land. If you would like to meetup and be on the show - just show up outside Gamers and keep an eye on my Twitter.

  • This weekend, I'll be at the Anime Contents Expo doing some work for King Records. After that, I'll be doing a live NicoNico broadcast from the King Records studios together with my co-host Yoshimi. It will be just like the Good Smile broadcast but focused on anime. Bring King Records, who knows who shall drop into the show ^^;

  • Moekana sold much more than anybody expected - the first production run sold out during the pre-order period! We are currently doing the second production run now so even if you order now you should still get one. Thank you to everybody who ordered! There will also be Moekana tournaments at Anime Festival Malaysia but you will obviously need your own pack to participate to win a load of goodies.
    Moekana should be with you in April.

  • I have some Japanese comrades in the industry taking a break in Rothenburg Germany during May 25th - 30th. If you speak some Japanese and would like to be a guide for them for a day then let me know in the comments.

I think thats about it for now ^^;

Baby Mirai

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

My wife and I have been trying to make smaller versions of ourselves for many moons but have been through 3 miscarriages. We were told that the likelihood of a miscarriage is only 5% but from the amount of friends who we have spoken to who have been through the same experience, I think the doctors have been telling us fibs.

But I'm delighted to let you know that we have finally be able to make a small human known as baby! She's currently 6 months old and is the main reason why I have not been writing much of late! She loves to wake up in the middle of the night and kick me in the face ^^;

And yes - we called her Mirai ^o^ Will be posting more photos of her on the site and will also be joining the GFAT (Gaijin Fathers Association in Tokyo) where we will share our experiences of cleaning poo and how to react when baby farts on the train.
