MacBook Air i7

Thanks to your feedback on my Twitter and Facebook, I went for the MacBook Air i7 instead of the i5. Have no idea what the speeds of the i5 would have been but the MacBook Air i7 is incredibly fast - so fast that I became confused at why it was faster than my 17" 2.8 Ghz (Intel Core Duo) MacBook Pro (late 2009) with 8GB's of memory.

BTW, this wallpaper and others can be found in the Culture Japan End Card Wallpapers post which is updated weekly after each episode.

I went for the upgraded MacBook Air 1.8GHz dual core i7 with 4GB's of memory and 256GB SSD. This is my first machine with an SSD and am wondering whether the speed boost is because of the SSD or processor or both?

There is a poll embedded in this article.
There is a poll embedded in this article.

SSD's are still a bit pricey over here. Folks in Japan looking for some would go to Kakaku.com as they have the cheapest listings available for any electronic item.
At the time of writing, a 512GB SSD costs 57,599 yen. Are SSD's any cheaper in your neck of the woods?

The MacBook Air comes with media based software. If you want to re-install Lion then you can do it from the Disk Utility application which can be found in Lion - I think it grabs it from the Internet so you need to be connected if you want to re-install.

So why did I pick up this machine when I've already got a MacBook Pro 13" that I take on business trips? The main reason is that lugging around heavy stuff does by spinal hernia in which does not seem to be getting any better ToT

However, to my surprise, after discovering just how fast this machine is, I'll probably end up replacing my 17" MacBook Pro with it.
One of the things that I practice as part of Time Management is to invest in stuff that enables me to do things quicker and smarter - whether its getting a faster machine, paying for an online service which saves me time in some way or another, or whether its buying a load of cabinets which help me keep organized better so that I can find things quicker.

Time is running out for all of us. We cant buy time but the next best thing we can do is save time - and thats fine even if it costs money because money is no use when one is 6 foot under.

I had a feeling that tactile keyboards were going to be replaced by a touch screen one day and there already have been a few manufacturers doing so. It would mean that I could switch to a Korean keyboard without the stickers anymore ^^

When I get a new Mac, I usually clone the drive over to the new machine but this time round I tried the Migration Assistant feature. I start the app on the MacBook Pro 17" and authenticate the MacBook Air to access the machine. I choose what settings and files I want to be transfered over and wait.

An hour later - my MacBook Air is pretty much a copy of my MacBook Pro with all my settings and passwords, software etc so I dont need to reinstall anything. Lovely.

Tis a lovely machine with a resolution of 1440 x 900 px.
There is a poll embedded in this article.

Still cant get over how the MacBook Air kicks seven shades of poo out of my MacBook Pro 17" which is only 2 years older ToT. Have just ordered a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable so that I can use the iMac as an external display in Target Mode.

Just wondering how many of you are Mac users?
There is a poll embedded in this article.
If you are a Mac user, what is your main machine?
There is a poll embedded in this article.

Think I mentioned it before, but I used to absolutely hate Macs because I was forced to use one at work. When I was at Amazon, I couldn't understand what my staff used a Mac for and thought it was only for mail and Internets ^^; Anyway, I need to write up my history of Mac usage soon.

BTW, the girls in this post are from Prima Stella illustrated by Choco Chip sensei.

My wife uses a Mac and so do my daughters.

As we start planning for Culture Japan Season 3, more Mac equipment will start to flood the office - but I need somebody to join me in using them! Info on internships soon.

Culture Japan Jobs

$

Many folks think that my full time job is one where I sit at a computer waiting for mails to come in to be answered ^^;
After leaving corporate life at Amazon and Microsoft, I started a small company called Mirai. Based in Tokyo, we focus on spreading Japanese culture throughout the world through mediums such as web, TV and events.

Since 2007, we have accumulated clients like Good Smile Company, Bushiroad, Kadokawa, Konami, Ascii Media Works, Dentsu, King Records, Nitroplus, Tokyo MX and the Japanese government. More details about what we get up to listed on my profile page. 2010 - 2011 has been a period of building clientele and 2012 will be the year of expansion and growth.

Discovering Japanese culture has completely changed my life as you may have read and I feel an obligation to continue to share this wonderful culture with the world - I currently seek somebody who feels the same about Japanese culture and would like to help me with the Culture Japan brand of media and products.

All these are part-time positions and are constantly open - if I cant take you on at the time then I can introduce you to some of my clients who can take you on. Some require you to be in Japan - some do not. Depending on your level of Ninja Karma, some of these can turn into full time positions in Tokyo.

Programmers

Am looking for a *seasoned* RUBY, AJAX, MYSQL, HTML 5, CSS, UNIX guru for a long term contract which will turn into a full time position if all works out well.
You should be familiar with Github, and be able to setup and compile a server. All programmers who work for us will do so on a Mac environment.

Mobile Developers

Am looking for iOS and Android developers. Send in links to examples of your previous work.

Designers

Am looking for designers who are well versed with Photoshop, Fireworks and Illustrator. You will be designing for anime production, TV production, web, print and products. Basic Japanese and the ability to read Katakana, Hiragana and some kanji is required for this position.

Video Camera Wo/men

Am looking for freelance video camera wo/men in the Tokyo area. You need a good command of Japanese for this job. State which video camera equipment you regularly use and send links to examples of your work (YouTube etc).

Sound Wo/men

Am looking for sound engineers in the Tokyo area. You need a fair command of Japanese for this job.

Non Linear Editors

Am looking for Final Cut Pro 7 / Final Cut Pro X / Adobe Premiere editors in the Tokyo region who have an excellent command of Japanese. However we are using Final Cut Pro X for the second season of Culture Japan.

Translators

I look for translators from time to time on my Twitter and Facebook and recently hired one to help me work on Culture Japan - he ended up being web savvy too so now he is also working on the websites for many of my clients.

If you are interested in any of these positions then send mail to [jobs at mirai dot fm] with links to your online portfolio.

I think that's about it for now - am waiting for your mail!

Ah, nearly forgot to mention - if you are interested in these positions but dont have any of these skills then dont despair because its free to ask Google Sensei. I acquired all my design, programming and video editing skills from the Internets in my own time and you can do so to - investing in improving yourself is key to avoid becoming the person that you dont want to be and living a life that you dont want to live.
Example's of how I self studied can read in the How I started to build my Career in Japan post.

Mirai Suenaga wishes you all a happy Halloween! This adorabe illustration is from the Moekana series and is actually for the hiragana "ho" [ほ] for "houki" [帚[ほうき]] which means "broom". Illustration is by Ikkyu-san.

I've uploaded a version to Flickr with transparency so that you can play about with it. I need to start sticking the copyright mark on my images but its only there to let folks know who the copyright owner is - you are still free to play with the images for personal use.

If you are wondering what happened to the Moekana series - they are all being used as the current ED for Culture Japan and I'm currently focusing on getting the Moekana Japanese learning products out onto the market in time for the American and Asia broadcast.

And another Halloween Mirai by Pinax - kawaii!

Are you fed up with your slow internet speeds? Are you fed up of not being able to have babies with the AKB48 girls?
If your answer is possibly "yes" then this is your lucky day. Now you can have fast Internets and make siblings with the AKB48 girls.

AKB48 is now an Internet provider - get along to AKB Official Net, give them your moolah and once you are a member, you can gain access to AKBaby - an online member feature which will let you have babies with the AKB girls.

Your hard earned cash will get you more than the Internets and babies - you get your very own mail address like oppai@akb48.ne.jp and privilidges to concert tickets and wot not - all for just 1,480 yen per month.

To use AKBaby, all you do is upload a photo of yourself and the tool will morph your photo together with the AKB girls photo to generate a....cute (?) baby.
The future is here.

Blue Snowball Microphone

Been meaning to get round to it for a long time but will try to review all the equipment that we use for TV production.
Narration (known as "Afureco" [アフレコ] in Japanese which is short for "After Recording") for Culture Japan Season 2 is done in my office. For the pilot episode of Culture Japan Season 0, we used a studio in Roppongi who charged us 200,000 yen for using their facilities - and for only a few hours!
My production budget would run out pretty quick if we carried on like that so decided to do it myself.

The voice actress for Mirai Suenaga is UTACO and we regularly stream our recording sessions from the studio on my Ustream channel - you need to keep an eye out on my Twitter or Facebook as broadcasts are spontaneous - yesterdays broadcast below.

Previously we used a Tascam recorder (the one on the desk in this photo) but it was a slow process - record onto SD card - insert card into Mac - copy files to Mac, drag audio files to timeline and so on.

After looking around for a decent mic, I came across the Blue Snowball microphone - pretty much decided to get it based on YouTube reviews and sound samples. Got mine from Amazon for 7,480 yen.

The Snowball comes with a retro look n feel in chrome, white or black. The mic can be removed from its retractable stand and the legs can be folded. I didn't know this the first time we recorded but the mic head can tilt too.

Switch on the back for various types of recording. I leave it on "1" which is standard narration. "2" is for ambient sounds like a concert and I think "3" is for recording instruments.

The Blue Snowball plugs in via USB to the Mac and is recognized straight away - no drivers needed.

The recording process is now a pleasure - Final Cut Pro X has a feature which allows you to record an audio clip directly onto the timeline - you select the event where the clip is stored and start recording - the video will start to play automatically when recording starts - lovely.

Nice box but I usually throw all boxes away for stuff that I know I'm going to keep. What do you do with all your boxes for equipment, figures etc?
There is a poll embedded in this article.

The first mic I picked up initially was this Samson Meteor Mic - but it was a dud and just didn't work. Luckily Amazon has a great returns policy.
How many of you work in video production?
Before I get more reviews out, for the time being you can see some more of my TV production environment in the earlier Japan TV Production post.
BTW, are you more of a gadget person or figure person or both or neither?

Desk Diary 2011/08

$

Uploaded the September installment of Desk Diary a while ago but missed posting photos of what the office looked like before then - only managed to find a wee bit of time today to clear out the backlog - but as I really only have a wee bit of time, most of this post is going to be a photodump.

Most of these photos taken during July and August where I've been the most busiest with the production of Culture Japan which is currently in its second season across Japan. I've got about 5 episodes to film and edit before prepping for season 3. Hope to make time to take a couple of days off in January.

I've only got a week to go before I head to Singapore for AFA but need to hand in two episodes worth of Culture Japan, give a talk at the G1 conference this week, prep a talk for AFA and make sure that my booth and products reach Singapore in time - and thats just 10% of my to-do list ^^;

While I'm having difficulty updating the site often, I do update my social networks more - my Google Plus, Twitter and Facebook.

Oh, and thanks to all who have submitted job applications - I need time to go through all of them. I'll get through most but dont think I can reply to the "I have not got the skills but am willing to learn" - I would love to reply to them all but I'd just be replying to emails literally all day long.

I always make a point of investing time to save time - time taken to get rid of stuff that I dont want so that I can easily find the stuff that I do want. Time needed to organize stuff (as opposed to just chucking stuff) is important too.

Keeping stuff organized is key to enable you to do more.

Messy and I just cant find what I need in a timely manner.

This is better but I need to seek a better way to organize this. Boxes in the drawer help a lot.

This is the TV production drawer and is ugghhhh!

I feel dizzy when I see stuff like this. Mess like this happens because I dont have time to wire stuff up and place them back neatly. Even if I did however, I probably wouldn't care too much about the stuff that I dont need which I would end up keeping for a long time. I guess that the occasional mess helps me identify and chuck out stuff.
I think I have enough USB cables to start up my own shop.

Much better with a few cables disposed of - I'm not going to need 15 USB cables.

The TV production area looking much better but still not optimum.

Need to dispose of some HDD's - smashed with a hammer and torn apart ^^;
How do you dispose of your HDD's?

I think I got enough GB's of memory to start up shop too ^^;

The DMX-LVF1 digital view finder for the Lumix GF series - ideal for bright sunny days where you cant see the LCD screen. Its for sale if you want it - got for about 15,000 yen but yours for 6,000 yen - to pick up from Musashikoyama station in Meguro Tokyo. Lemme know.

I dont like clunky speakers but needed some for Culture Japan editing. Got these Creative T12 speakers which are supposed to be bluetooth - but they make a popping sound which seems like its trying to keep the connection alive and sometimes the sound lags. I currently use it wired up to the iMac.
What speakers do you recommend for the computing environment?

Got some LED bulbs but what I didn't know is that they have a reputation of being dark.

I now have 4 of these Mirror Light HDD cases for editing. They cost 11,990 yen each. They allow me to just slot in a HDD and start editing.

What I like about these is that the HDD's don't need extra fittings - they just slot in.

Now I can get rid of this mess - the cradles we previously used.

And the drawer of HDD's which store both seasons of Culture Japan.

A lookie around the office. The large material banners available from Kidnemo who ship worldwide.

I cant remember if I showed you this lot before - photos were in the same folder.

My girls like Apple products - thanks to Dollfie World they can actually have some for their own use.

Didn't have time to dress Karin from ages after Anime Expo.

Have invested in Eneloop over the years and now have a load - got this charger to save time - now can do 12 at a time instead of 4.

Wifey learning some Final Cut Pro X ^^

The Blue Snowball Microphone which I reviewed in a separate post.

Ryomo looking as lovely as ever. Am I allowed to say that about my own girls?

The Jawbone is a compact bluetooth speaker with powerful bass. Pricey but worth it if you want something that does not take up a load of room. It also lasts about 10 hours on one charge. Not idea for editing a show as you really need to hear the LR channels on each side.

More sample T-shirts. Reason why they are not on sale right now is because I test my products for a while before I let them go in for manufacture - having crappy quality stuff on the market may bring in money for the short term but will ultimately do brand damage in the long term.

I use Teleport to control many macs from my main machine. The latest version however has less features - stick with 1.1!

Nanoha looks after my USB memory.

Mirai-chan by Piromizu sensei.

Cant wait for wireless electricity. But I'd probably be dead when that becomes a standard.

Before I forget - from time to time, I broadcast my work on my Ustream Channel - I'm either recording with UTACO or editing on Final Cut Pro.

Only a few months after the release of figma Mirai Suenaga, the Solar Marine version is here! I knew figma's were released in the droves but didn't realize they were produced this quickly ^^;

Mirai has been steadily growing her fan base in Japan since the second season of Culture Japan started its run in Japan. This figma is actually a custom made Solar Marine version by a Japanese user on FG called Ponzu. I want one!

Mirai with her Millennium Blade. Great work all round!

Info on Mirai Millennium is all over the place - I need to make time to centralize everything ToT. For now you can see some bits n pieces in the Mirai Millennium Design post.

Mirai Millennium OP

$

0

We've seen Mirai Suenaga animated in anime guest appearances such as Twin Angel and Mayo Chiki but finally we get to see her animated in her own anime series called Mirai Millennium - and before I forget - this 2560px x 1440px wallpaper lives here.

Those of you who read the earlier post will have seen the making of the opening sequence that I've produced with JC Staff. The opening sequence was produced in about 4 weeks of intensive work on a very tight budget. The first version that we see has been modified to be the opening of Culture Japan Season 2.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-M7dC94Kv8

The character design of the anime versions are created by Kazunori Iwakura who is also responsible for titles like Railgun, Toradora, Sky Girls, Kimikiss, Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, Shakugan no Shana, Hidan no Aria and more.

Here we see our 4 main characters (from left to right) Haruka Suenaga, Mirai Suenaga, Eiji Seiun and Kanata Hoshikawa. Detailed design references in the Mirai Millennium Design post and character profiles currently live here.

The scenario is almost complete but I want to reveal it with some visuals which I should hopefully get round to in January after season 2 of Culture Japan has settled down.

And here are some of the screenshots from the opening. JC Staff done all the character animation cells and I produced the rest with Pinax. Budget for the OP was taken from the Culture Japan production pool which is not a lot in the first place - this is why you will notice that we've reused a lot of elements in the various cuts.

The work done by Mirai Fusion was mostly created in 3D Max, Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere.

JC Staff provided us with mov files with transparency. Each animation sequence is only a few seconds long but I requested JC to make the frames loopable.

The whole OP was originally going to be a single looping walking sequence but seeing that I was asking JC to do just the animation, I could cut costs by doing the rest myself and asking JC to do different cuts.

Folks who are interested in producing anime can do so on a tight budget by leaving just the animation to an anime production company - then do the backgrounds, editing and sound yourself - from all those skills you picked up from Google Sensei.

If I asked JC Staff to do the whole thing then it would have cost at least 4 times more. But even if I did have the cash, doing it alone is always the preferred choice which is required to pick up experience. One can pick up skills for free from the Internet but experience is something that you need to sacrifice your own time and money for.

The theme song is called "Sukirai" [スキライ] which means "like and hate" and is sung by Mirai Suenaga - the voice actress for Mirai being Utaco.

The OP features clips of Culture Japan dotted around the place.

All of these full HD screenshots (1920px x 1080px) have been uploaded to my Google Plus account for you to play with.

Mirai's after-school-hours classroom cut.

These two ladies are in Episode 3 of Culture Japan Season 2.

The fate of mirror planets...

This is what Mirai-chan wears for sleep and design is based on what my daughters wear at home.

The ball shaped object is Retrokyu - is not only Mira's companion but also transforms into her Retrograde Suit.

Mirai about to slice n dice with her Millennium Blade.

Mirai looks over the city - its been a while since the Millennium Gates mysteriously stopped functioning.

I could not afford to have the other characters animated at this time so they get the still treatment ^^;

The OP scrolls for quite a bit to enable me to fit in our sponsors logos. The highway gates you see in the middle of the screenshot were supposed to have some sort of lighting or wording on the black bits - but didn't get enough time to get round to it.

The Kanata fanbase seems to be growing? Who is your fave out of the 3 girls?
There is a poll embedded in this article.
There is a poll embedded in this article.

Just like Star Wars, artists misinterpretations we have - Iwakura-san drew Eiji's double watch squarish rather than round ^^

Need to make the Retrokyu > Retrograde Suit sequence soon.

Reused the highway gates here ^^;

Retrograde Suit arms created and rendered in 3D Max.

Boosters on!

The last cut is by Skan and Chun.

2560px x 1440px wallpaper here.

2560px x 1440px wallpaper here desu.

2560px x 1440px wallpaper here and dont forget the rest at Google Plus.

The priorities for 2012 are:-
1. Online expansion
2. Mirai Products
3. Culture Japan Season 3
3. Mirai Millennium
In that order - but will try to do them all at the same time ^^;

And for folks constantly asking about Chinka - I'm hands off that project as I focus on my own IP.

Hmmmm. Whats all this then?

Japanese V Sign

$

0

You see it in Anime, J-Drama, movies, commercials and in many photos where Japanese folks are being photographed - the Peace Sign or V-sign.
I see many poking fun at the Japanese who find it uncool or strange that they should do such a gesture. But why do they do it and where does the V-sign come from?

According to the English Wikipedia, during the 1972 Winter Olympics in Japan, skater Janet Lynn (who was also a peace activist) was photographed by the Japanese media doing the V-sign. Although the V-sign was already recognized in Japan, it was apparently these photos of Lynn that popularized the use of the V-sign.
The Japanese entry in Wikipedia however does not mention Lynn at all and instead gives 2 theories of when the V-sign started to take off.
One theory says that the V-sign became popular after actor Jun Inoue decided to do the gesture in a Nikon commercial back in 1972.

Another theory talks about how the V-sign took off in the 80's when kids started to do the gesture when having their photos taken. Back then it was common to say "Peace" at the same time.
Whatever the origin, folks in Japan like to do the peace sign and I find it awesome when cute girls do it ^^;

I've got a plane to catch to Singapore in a few hours and I have not packed or done my presentation - noooooooooooo!! I've been working with my men on ground zero prepping my booth for the Anime Festival Asia. Please forgive me for the next few days because you'll see a load of AFA and Mirai stuff as thats what I'm focusing my efforts on right now ^o^

The Mirai Itasha that will be on display at the AFA is complete! Thanks to Alvin for sacrificing his BMW to be done up with the gorgeous illustrations of Yuzusoft illustrator Kobuichi. As with my previous Itasha designs, I like to keep the design simple instead of having every corner plastered.

Anyway me better dash or I'll miss my plane. Arriving later on the NH111 (Tuesday 8th) at 17:25 and heading directly for the most important part of the trip - om nom noms!

This "the making of Itasha" report is brought to you by Yukino-chan.

And this is the design that I gave my folks. Again - simple which is the theme for next year. The website design will be soon be simplified too.

Meetup details for Singapore!
Previously known as CGM Night, "Culture Japan Night" continues with the same mission to bring together folks who are passionate about Japanese Pop Culture to network and explore new opportunities and friendships.

We had a great time at last years Singapore CGM Night but I think that this year will be even better. This year we have our own venue which is the official AKB48 cafe in Scape. The time will be next Monday 14th November and will be open only to Culture Japan readers and their comrades. Doors open at 3PM and we can stay around until 10PM. You obviously can come and leave when you want though ^^;

The cafe has to pay its bills however and we will be charging 10 SGD at the door where you will get a drink and buffet. You can also order more dishes separately too.
Folks who are interested, just like last year - please register your attendance using this form.

There will be a table on stage for doll and figure displays, street fighter and trading card game tournaments. Have a look at last years shenanigans - will be even more fun this year!

Will be signing stuff and we'll do a photo session too. And its the AKB48 cafe so who knows - maybe a few of the girls will turn up? @.@
Look forward to meeting you all liao!

Photos in this post taken by Kodomut, F.Yukino, Tatsuya and Bell. If you see yourself then please annotate yourself and leave your facebook or Twitter account if you have one!
Thank you to everybody who came and hope to do this more often than just once a year.

My schedule in Singapore for the past week has been packed and only managed to get out in daylight yesterday! The rest of the time its just been getting into a taxi to heading to a venue where I would stay indoors all day for rehearsals or AFA. I've got filming later this morning before I leave to head back to Japan tomorrow night Thursday on the ANA flight to Haneda/Tokyo.

Not sure if I 'll be able to get any other posts out before I leave but most of my updates are actually going to my Facebook and Twitter where you can see photos that I've taken over the past few days.
